Zellers Redevelopment Victoria Square Demolition

Location: Regina, SK

Medicine Hat High School was originally built in the 1960s. The modernization transformed the school into a 21st century learning environment that fosters student growth and promotes community. The design included open collaboration spaces for students and staff, supported by smaller breakout and meeting rooms. The modernization project was delivered through four main phases, all while the school remained fully operational for 1,200 students and staff:

  • Phase 1: Addition of a new double gym (the largest in Alberta), cosmetology work area, CTS shop, locker/change room area and communications lab/classroom space.
  • Phase 2: Complete interior demolition and asbestos abatement of the south building, followed by interior modernizations. Major upgrades included turning the existing gymnasium into a new central gathering area and learning commons with three large skylights, as well as new front entrances, stairwells, elevators, classroom spaces, science lab, underground plumbing, HVAC systems, etc.
  • Phase 3: Addition to the fine arts building, as well as complete renovations to the interior.
  • Phase 4: Demolition of the North-East building, as well as major utility upgrades and re-
routing, and a modernization of the exterior softscape and parking lot.
