Stuart Lake Hospital Construction: Project Update

April 9, 2024

Graham is pleased to provide an update on the progress of the Stuart Lake Hospital construction project, a significant endeavor undertaken by the Northern Health Authority. This project marks a pivotal step in enhancing healthcare infrastructure in Fort St. James, BC, replacing the aging hospital originally built in the 1970s.

The new Stuart Lake Hospital is a Progressive Design-Build project encompassing 70,000 sq. ft. It aims to address the community’s evolving healthcare needs by offering modernized and expanded facilities. Featuring 27 beds, the new hospital integrates inpatient services, long-term care, and a primary care clinic under one roof. Additionally, it houses essential amenities such as an emergency department, laboratory, diagnostic imaging, spiritual and gathering space, and palliative care services.

Groundbreaking commenced in May 2022. Currently, we are in the final stages of the project, completing interior finishes and commencing the commissioning of various building components. Anticipated substantial completion is targeted for Q4 2024, paving the way for phase 2, which involves the demolition of the existing hospital in 2025.

Despite encountering several challenges, including pandemic-induced supply chain constraints, remote location, and labour shortages, the project continues to achieve all metrics of success. This success is attributed to the collaborative efforts of all project partners, including Graham and the Health Authority, in adhering to a transparent and efficient Progressive Design-Build approach.

In navigating the complexities of a remote project, we have leveraged innovative tools such as OpenSpace ®, which has proven invaluable. This platform facilitates comprehensive project visualization for the management team, owner, consultants, and cost certifier, minimizing the need for frequent travel and reducing both costs and carbon footprint.
